What happened at Largo Drive in Savannah?

A shooting on Largo Drive in Savannah left one person with serious injuries on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, the Savannah Police Department said. WTOC reported police describing the injured person as one man; WJCL 22 News reported police saying the shooting left one person seriously hurt. The stations have separate corporate owners — WTOC belongs to Gray Media, WJCL to Hearst Television — so this is two independent newsrooms carrying the same police statement.

Savannah police told WTOC the shooting happened at around 2:46 p.m. Police also told the station that two groups were having an altercation before the individual was shot. That is the full extent of what has been said about the circumstances, and this report does not go further than it.

Georgia Southern University told its students to shelter in place while the department investigated, and said two suspects were not in custody. WJCL 22 News described a heavy police presence on Largo Drive near Windsor Forest High School, with more Savannah Police vehicles at the nearby Publix. WTOC crews at the scene reported police tape around a nearby apartment complex.

The injured man has not been named, and no condition update has been released.

Was the shooting at Windsor Road or Woodley Road?

The two accounts do not agree, and The Local Alert has not resolved it.

The Georgia Southern University Office of Public Safety alert, carried by both WTOC and WJCL 22 News, placed the shooting at Largo Drive and Windsor Road.

Savannah police, in an update WJCL 22 News published at 3:51 p.m., said officers responded to Largo Drive and Woodley Road.

Windsor Road and Woodley Road are two different streets. Neither account has been withdrawn or corrected by the body that gave it, so both appear here as they were given. That is also why neither street name is in this page's headline.

What did the Georgia Southern shelter-in-place alert say?

WJCL 22 News published the text of the emergency alert at 3:38 p.m. Two sentences describing the race of the people sought are left out here, and are addressed below.

This is an emergency alert from the Georgia Southern University Office of Public Safety: SAVANNAH POLICE DEPT is investigating an OFF CAMPUS shooting incident at Largo Drive and Windsor Road. There are 2 suspects that are NOT in custody at this time. […] Direction of travel is unknown at this time. Suspects were last seen in the area of the Joseph Landings Apartment Complex located at 12350 Mercy Blvd. SHELTER IN PLACE until an ALL CLEAR Eagle Alert is sent out.
— Georgia Southern University Office of Public Safety, as published by WJCL 22 News

Reporting that a university ordered a shelter in place is not this page telling anyone what to do. The instruction came from Georgia Southern, and the university said it holds until an all clear Eagle Alert is sent.

Who are the two people sought near Joseph Landings Apartment Complex on Mercy Boulevard?

Nobody has been named, and nobody has been charged. Georgia Southern officials said the two were last seen near the Joseph Landings Apartment Complex at 12350 Mercy Blvd., and that their direction of travel was unknown, per WTOC and WJCL 22 News.

The alert described what they were wearing: one in a white tank top, the other in a white T-shirt and khaki pants. The Local Alert is not republishing the race description carried in the alert; WTOC's own report also left it out.

Is Windsor Forest High School on lockdown?

Yes, as of Tuesday afternoon. WJCL 22 News reported at 3:47 p.m. that Savannah-Chatham County Schools said Windsor Forest High School was on lockdown and its doors had been secured.

The district said students had already been dismissed for the day, and that anyone still on campus for afterschool activities was brought inside.

Neither newsroom reported that anyone at the school was involved. What both reported is proximity: the police activity was near the campus.

What we don't know yet

  • Which cross street is correct. The Georgia Southern alert says Windsor Road; Savannah police told WJCL 22 News it was Woodley Road. Neither has been corrected, and we have not resolved it
  • Whether an all clear Eagle Alert has been sent by Georgia Southern University
  • The injured man's identity and condition. No name, age or hospital has been released
  • What the altercation between the two groups was about, and whether anyone involved in it was the person shot
  • The identities and ages of the two people sought, and whether either has been located
  • Whether the apartment complex ringed with police tape, described by WTOC crews, is the same complex named in the alert
  • How long the Windsor Forest High School lockdown will last
  • No verified statistics on shootings in this part of Savannah are included here. No figure for this corridor or this period could be confirmed from a named public source while this page was written, so none is published. A number nobody can trace is worse than no number

About this report

Compiled by The Local Alert Georgia Staff from two independently owned news outlets: WTOC (Gray Media) and WJCL 22 News (Hearst Television). A third Savannah newsroom was also covering the incident, but its report could not be retrieved and nothing from it is used here. The injured man is not named by any source and is not named here. No one has been arrested or charged, and the two people described in the Georgia Southern alert are presumed innocent. The race description contained in that alert is not republished here. The two accounts of where the shooting happened name different cross streets, and that disagreement is reported rather than resolved. This is a developing story and details may change. The Local Alert is not a law enforcement agency and not a law firm. Corrections and removal requests: see our corrections policy.
