In practice that means two tracks run at once on Old Waynesboro Road — a criminal investigation by the sheriff’s office, and a death investigation on the coroner’s side that ends in a cause and manner of death.

What does a Georgia coroner do after a death like this one?

Georgia’s death investigation rules start with a duty to call the coroner. O.C.G.A. § 45-16-24(a) lists the deaths that trigger it, and the first item on that list is a death “As a result of violence.”

When a death falls on that list, the statute says “it shall be the duty of any law enforcement officer or other person having knowledge of such death to notify immediately the coroner or county medical examiner of the county in which the acts or events resulting in the death occurred or the body is found.”

The coroner does not then have a choice about whether to look further. Subsection (b) provides that a coroner or county medical examiner notified of a death that resulted from violence “shall order a medical examiner’s inquiry of that death.”

From there, O.C.G.A. § 45-16-25(a)(1) directs that the coroner or county medical examiner “shall immediately take charge of the body,” and (a)(2) puts the coroner under a duty to summon a medical examiner and a proper peace officer.

That sequence is why a scheduled autopsy is an ordinary step after a shooting death in Georgia.

Who performs an autopsy for a Georgia coroner?

Most Georgia counties do not employ their own forensic pathologist. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Medical Examiner’s Office states that it provides complete forensic pathology services to 155 of Georgia’s 159 counties in deaths that qualify as coroner cases under that Act.

Cases reach that office from coroners, deputy coroners and government officials, and requests for examinations are taken around the clock, the office says. It then decides whether a postmortem examination will be performed.

Autopsies themselves are conducted by GBI medical examiners at the headquarters laboratory in Decatur and at regional laboratories in Macon and in Pooler, outside Savannah, according to the office. Transport of a body to the laboratory is arranged by the county where the death happened, where the body was found, or where the incident that led to the death occurred.
