Is West Laurens Middle School open Friday?

Yes. West Laurens Middle School will return to its regular schedule Friday, according to the Laurens County School System, and students and staff should report at their normal times. The county district had said it would deliver that decision by 6 p.m. Thursday.

The school lost two days. It was closed Wednesday because of the water main break affecting the campus, and closed again Thursday, with all activities on the West Laurens Middle School campus canceled that day. Every other school in the Laurens County School System was set to run a regular Thursday schedule, including after-school activities.

Dublin City Schools is a separate district, and its calendar moved separately. All of its schools closed Wednesday for students and staff; the district said the city told it about the break at 5:11 a.m. that morning. In its Wednesday statement the district told families, “We expect the situation to be resolved today and classes to resume tomorrow.” Later Wednesday it announced there would be no school Thursday for students or staff either, a call it said it made after speaking with City of Dublin officials — the repairs were done by then, but the advisory was not.

What broke on Joiner Street in Dublin?

A 16-inch water line broke on Joiner Street on Tuesday night, Mayor Joshua Kight said. The city found the leak at around 8 p.m. Tuesday on Joiner Street close to the Marcus Street intersection, and the city cut water production so crews could get to the repair. The break was described as a “significant water leak.”

Kight, on the crews who worked it: “They have been out there all night without rest working hard to repair this issue.” He also said, “I apologize for the disruption this water issue is causing to our residents, schools and businesses.”

By Wednesday the repairs to the main were complete and water service was being restored, the city said, but the advisory stayed in effect until further notice. Residents were told to keep boiling anything they drank or cooked with, along with water for brushing teeth and for ice, for as long as it held. Powell told WGXA at 2 p.m. Wednesday that the city’s water pressure was “mostly restored.”

Did the downtown Dublin fire affect the water system?

No. The City of Dublin said system-wide water pressure remained stable and sufficient, and that the advisory status was completely independent of the fire and the emergency response to it. The two overlapped in time and in nothing else.

The fire started right before 9 p.m. Wednesday, and a building at 316 E. Jackson Street in downtown Dublin was completely engulfed, the city said. Dublin Fire, Laurens County Fire and East Dublin Fire responded, along with police and sheriff’s offices, EMS and other first responders. Firefighters contained it, and nearby buildings were not damaged.

Nearby power connections were disconnected to protect responders, which knocked out power in areas near downtown; Georgia Power worked to restore it.

The water situation did shape the response. Because of the city’s ongoing water issues, crews brought extra water and pulled in additional first responders from the Wrightsville and Allentown fire crews, with help from Dodge and Johnson State Prisons.
