FOX 5 Atlanta, citing the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, reported that game wardens were notified around 11:06 a.m., that the boat was a large speed boat participating in a poker run, and that all five were ejected and taken to Kennestone Hospital in Cobb County with various serious injuries.

Atlanta News First reported the same core account from DNR: the accident happened just after 11 a.m., a boat participating in a poker run event hit the shore "at a high rate of speed," all five people on the boat were ejected, and all were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

CBS News Atlanta reported the DNR account with one wrinkle worth flagging: it wrote that a preliminary investigation found the group was heading to a poker run event, and described the five as having been thrown into the air during the accident.

Those two framings — participating in a poker run versus heading to one — are not the same thing, and no agency has spelled out which it was. We are flagging the difference rather than picking the version that reads better.

No deaths have been reported. No names, ages or genders have been released. No agency has given the current condition of any of the five. The cause has not been determined.

What is worth understanding is the equipment the format tends to attract. Poker Runs America's own description of the scene references boats running at 120 mph and 200 mph, which tells you the class of hull these events draw. DNR described the vessel in this accident only as a large speed boat. DNR's Critical Incident Reconstruction Team is the unit FOX 5 Atlanta and CBS News Atlanta reported was assigned to this investigation. DNR has not published a description of the team's remit, and we are not going to characterize it. FOX 5 Atlanta reported that the DNR Law Enforcement Critical Incident Reconstruction Team was assigned to investigate this accident.

The practical meaning for families: this is not a same-week answer. A reconstruction team gets sent when there is something to reconstruct. Speed, angle of impact, throttle and steering position, seating, damage patterns and witness accounts all have to be worked and cross-checked before anything is stated as a finding.

DNR has not published a timeline for its findings in this case, and we are not going to invent one.

Why does "all five ejected" matter?

Because it is the detail that tells you the most about the forces involved, and because it is the detail that gets glossed over.

An ejection means the impact overwhelmed everything holding a person in the boat. In a car, ejection is the outcome seat belts exist to prevent. Are life jackets required in Georgia?

Note what the shoreline clause actually covers: shoreline adjacent to a residence, park, beach, swimming area, marina, restaurant or other public use area. It is not a blanket rule about every foot of undeveloped bank.

No agency has alleged that this rule, or any other, was violated on Lake Allatoona. DNR has not announced a citation, a charge or a finding. We are explaining the rule because readers are searching for it, and stopping there.

Does a poker run need a permit in Georgia?

Georgia DNR operates a marine event permit process, governed by Chapter 391-4-5 of the department's rules.
