A man has been charged in the July shooting death of Cameron Boone, a 13-year-old boy who was killed inside a home in northwest Atlanta, the Atlanta Police Department said.

Davion Curney is charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct, along with tampering with evidence and false statements, Atlanta News First reported on Friday, Aug. 14. He was taken to the Fulton County Jail.

Curney has been charged. He has not been convicted of anything, no court has heard the case, and nothing set out in the arrest warrants has been tested in front of a judge or a jury.

His father, Anthony Boone, told WSB-TV that his son stayed at the house because he liked to play video games there, and that the home belonged to a relative. Anthony Boone said he lived a couple of blocks away and ran to the scene after a call.

The boy's uncle, Thomas Wyche, told Atlanta News First the family was stunned. “Just a young kid, a good kid,” Wyche said. “He plays games and stuff like that.”

What did police say the morning of July 28?

Officers reached the home just before 4 a.m. and found Cameron dead, WSB-TV reported. CBS Atlanta reported that the boy had been shot once and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Lt. Christopher Butler of the Atlanta Police Department confirmed that morning that the victim was a 13-year-old boy, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. FOX 5 also reported that the Fulton County Medical Examiner was examining whether the gunshot was self-inflicted.

Atlanta police said at the time it was too early to know whether the wound was self-inflicted, and that it was one of the possibilities being investigated, Atlanta News First reported. Other children were inside the home, and police confirmed no one else was hurt.

What did the boy's family say?

Anthony Boone told WSB-TV in late July that he was getting conflicting accounts of how his son died. He said people who were in the home told him Cameron shot himself, and that police told him it did not look like a suicide.

“I just want justice for Cameron,” he said. “I just want the truth to come out. Let me know what happened to my son.”

Wyche told FOX 5 Atlanta the family was waiting on the medical examiner. “But I don't believe that. We don't believe that. The family don't believe that,” he said of the suggestion that the shooting was self-inflicted.
